Reproducibility of analysis of the electrocardiogram in epidemiology using the 'Minnesota code'.

چکیده
Use of the electrocardiogram is necessary to advance knowledge of the epidemiology of ischaemic heart disease. Analysis of the electrocardiogram in epidemiological practice, however, may be difficult since the clinical method of interpretation cannot be used because of its deficiencies in standardization and reproducibility (Blackburn, 1968; Burgess, Fejfar, and Kagan, 1963; Davies, 1958; Higgins, Kannel, and Dawber, 1965; Rose, 1965; Rose and Blackburn, 1968; Scandinavian Committee on ECG Classification, 1967). Therefore, the epidemiologist must avoid any interpretation of the electrocardiogram. He has to give a description of it which should be as reproducible as possible and yet relevant to the diseases under study. Such a description has to be based on a set of measurements and not on the qualitative evaluation of certain patterns. The method of classification known as the Minnesota Code (Blackburn, Keys, Simonson, Rautaharju, and Punsar, 1960; Blackburn, 1968) answers this requirement. Since 1966 the Groupe d'Etude sur l'Epidemiologie de l'Atheroscl6rose (GREA) has used a particular protocol for this code; details have been published elsewhere* (Elgrishi, Ducimetiere, Richard, and Gelin, 1969). The present study examines the reproducibility of an analysis carried out in this way.

Gender Differences in the Prevalence of Electrocardiogram Abnormalities in the Elderly: A Population Survey in India
Background: The health transition in India reflects the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases. It is well-known that there are significant and meaningful differences in the measured electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters between females and males. Specific to ECG diagnosis and ischemia, reports have indicated a higher number of false positive results in female patients than in male patients. Th...

Background: We estimated the prevalence of angina pectoris (AP) and myocardial infarction (MI) in the hyperlipidaemic population of Bushehr using the ROSE questionnaire and ECG changes using the Minnesota code. Methods: 1036 residents of Bushehr (in southern Iran), aged 30-64 years, were enrolled as part of a 2-year cross-sectional prevalence study of diabetes mellitus and other risk factors fo...

Background: Job satisfaction could be assessed using the single-item global approach or the multidimensional approach. This study aims to assess the work facets predicting the overall single-item job satisfaction measure among resident doctors. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted from August to October 2018 among 195 resident doctors. The survey instrument, i.e. the Min...
متن کاملComparison of computer-assigned Minnesota Codes with the visual standard method for new coronary heart disease events.
The Minnesota Code is the most widely used electrocardiogram (ECG) classification system for epidemiologic studies and has been incorporated into several Computer algorithms. The authors compared the Modular ECG Analysis System (MC-MEANS) and NOVACODE computer ECG findings with the Visual coding standard for agreement and prognostic associations with coronary heart disease (CHD) events occurrin...
متن کاملA new approach to detect Life threatening cardiac arrhythmias using Sequential spectrum of Electrocardiogram signals
This study evaluates the discriminative power of sequential spectrum analysis of the short-term electrocardiogram (ECG) time series in separating normal and subjects with life threatening arrhythmias like, ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation (VT/VF). The raw ECG time series is transformed into a series of binary symbols and the binary occupancy or relative distribution of mono-sequences (i.e. ...
